As the cool, wet air of winter slips by and begins transitioning into spring, we are all looking for opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. And in Monterey, CA we’re overflowing with options! So whether you’re a biker, a sunbather, or a golfer, you’ll always find a means to curb your outdoor craving. These top outdoor things to do in Monterey, CA will make for a memorable trip and most enjoyable time during your stay in matchless Monterey.

Breathtaking Hikes

There’s hardly a more spectacular way of getting to know a city or exploring new surroundings than on foot. If you’re looking for a leisurely walk coupled with beautiful views, Jacks Peak County Park would be a perfect destination for you! At the peak of your hike here, you’ll find yourself engulfed by the views of Monterey Bay and the stunning Carmel Valley. If you’re someone who desires a more strenuous hike, Toro Park is 4,756 acres of rigid terrain and 20 miles of trails. This climb leads you up to a viewpoint of the gorgeous Salinas Valley and Monterey Bay.

Bike Rides

The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail is an 18-mile seaside road lined with an abundance of California wildflowers. This trail goes from Castroville in the north to Pacific Grove in the south. Along the trail, you’ll catch views of the glistening ocean dotted with sea lions and sea otters napping or playing along the rocky shore. It’s a perfect location for road biking, whether you’re a beginner out for sightseeing or an expert yearning for a nice challenge with a 5-star backdrop. The trail is also paved which is perfect for those with less experience or for families with children tagging along.

Golfing Galore

Monterey, CA is no stranger to the sport of golf. With nearly 30 of the best courses in California , a remarkable history of hosting the U.S. Opens, and numerous features in Golf Magazine, Monterey’s golfing reputation simply precedes itself. Professionals and enthusiasts alike travel across the nation to experience the challenging yet enjoyable courses along the coast and among the gentle hills and swaying trees of the natural Californian terrain. If you’re wanting to experience a true Monterey classic, the Pacific Grove Golf Links is not only historical but it is also beautiful with its oceanside views and naturally rolling terrain. This 18-hole course is renowned for its traditional design and competitive layout.

Beaches

Monterey State Beach is the largest beach in Monterey, CA. Open sunrise to sunset, you can enjoy shoreside volleyball courts, shaded picnic tables, and even barbecue pits. Along the coast, accommodations for kayak, bicycle, and canoe rentals are available. But maybe you’re not looking for an area with a crowd and lots of activity. McAbee Beach is a local favorite. This small shoreside is great for laying out in the warm sand or exploring the tide pools at low tide. And at high tide, tourists and locals enjoy sitting among the soft boulders to take a break from sightseeing and shopping. Carmel Beach at the foot of Ocean Avenue is a canine favorite. Although it’s good to be cautious of the riptides and sleeper waves, this gorgeous white sanded beach is great a great place for you and your furry family to enjoy. Dogs are allowed off-leash if they are trained with voice commands. It’s a perfect pairing with our lodge since we also allow dogs.

Outdoor Dining

Nothing quite beats sitting outside enjoying fresh air while eating delicious food. So if you’re interested in a traditional seafood meal by the water, Abalonetti Bar & Grill has been happily hosting guests since 1951 along the Old Fisherman’s Wharf. Their fresh fish and seafood are served in a cozy and relaxed setting. And their speciality? Expertly cooked calamari! If you’re hoping for something more casual and sophisticated, we recommend The Bench. This well-known contemporary grill offers seating overlooking a gorgeous 17-mile golf course and Pebble Beach. Their delicious dishes from a wood-burning stove will leave you wishing you had room for more.
